Six revelers dead in Haiti as wind overturns boat

Six young Haitians drowned when the small boat in which they and 14 other passengers were traveling overturned after a beach party in the north of the country, authorities said Tuesday.

The accident occurred Sunday afternoon near Cap-Haitien when the passengers, all aged between 18 and 25, were heading home, according to Yvon Alteon, a government official, who said members of the group appeared to have been drunk.

"The young people were in a motorboat that was overturned by a gust of wind after the group left a public beach after celebrating a birthday," said Alteon, citing the testimony of survivors.

Two bodies were recovered at the time of the accident and four more were found on Monday.

The 14 surviving passengers have returned home, officials said. The accident happened not far from the picturesque seaside resort of Labadee.

Cap-Haitien, on the northern coast, is Haiti's second-largest city.
